E-ZPass vs Cash: The Real Cost Difference for Drayage Fleets

Pay-by-plate surcharges and cash lane premiums cost the average drayage fleet 18–32% more per toll compared to E-ZPass — here's the math broken down by region.

Transponder discounting is not a loyalty program. It is the published tariff on most U.S. toll roads. Cash lanes and video toll exist for occasional travelers; commercial fleets that habitually run without tags are paying a deliberate premium — and on drayage corridors with 60+ crossings per truck monthly, that premium is a line item that belongs on the P&L, not buried in "miscellaneous."

Managed lanes and mainline plazas often publish separate transponder and video-toll rate tables.

Regional breakdown: where tagless hurts most

Northeast — E-ZPass territory

NJ Turnpike, PA Turnpike, Port Authority crossings, and MTA bridges publish transponder rates 25–40% below cash or TOLL BY PLATE for 5-axle commercial vehicles. Video toll on the Turnpike adds mail-invoice fees on top of the higher tariff.

Florida — SunPass and LeeWay

Turnpike segments bill video toll at a 20–35% surcharge. South Florida drayage from Miami port inland hits more tolled miles than most operators expect — tagless trucks are common among owner-operators and the surcharge is visible within the first week.

Texas — TxTag

Absolute tolls are lower than the Northeast, but Sam Houston Tollway loops and Dallas managed lanes stack small per-crossing video penalties ($0.50–$2.50) that aggregate fast on intermodal ramps.

Transponder policy should be as mandatory as ELDs — the ROI on a tag is often a single Turnpike week.

Fleet math: 20 trucks, one year

Assume 20 trucks, 60 tolled crossings monthly, $4.50 average underpayment per crossing (cash minus transponder). That is $5,400 per month — $64,800 annually — without adding a single mile of freight.

We issued transponders to every O/O in the fleet and updated TMS to assume E-ZPass rates on quotes. Customer pricing didn't change — our margin did.

Operational checklist

  1. Inventory transponders per truck; link account to plate, axle class, and weight class
  2. Ban quote assumptions that use cash rates when a tag is on the windshield
  3. Audit video toll invoices monthly — they flag missing or dead transponders
  4. Train dispatch to flag new trucks before first Turnpike run
  5. Use plaza-level estimates that show cash vs transponder side by side

DrayToll returns cash and transponder rates per plaza on the routed path so sales and operations see the spread before the truck moves.

Best toll-cost tool we've used. We finally bid lanes knowing the real toll burden — by axle class — instead of guessing and eating it later.

Just started using it and so far so good. The 5-axle toll numbers matched what hit our E-ZPass statement almost to the dollar.
